‘Suicide Squad’ Cast Assembles for Script Read Photo

By April 9, 2015

Suicide Squad will be the first major DC Comics film not to focus on either Superman or Batman, and it’s getting closer and closer to active production. A new photo tweeted out by the film’s director just gives further proof of that.

In a tweet by writer/director David Ayer, the full cast of Suicide Squad — sans Jared Leto, who will be playing the Joker but is currently touring with his band 30 Seconds to Mars — assembled for the first time in order to perform a table read of the script. Suicide Squad could prove to be a pivotal film in Warner Bros.’ upcoming slate of DC Comics-based films, since it will essentially open up the shared universe established by Man of Steel to characters other than the core Justice League members, most of whom will be appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. See the tweet of the cast below.

Included in the photo are writer/director David Ayer, and actors Joel Kinnaman, Raymond Olubowale, Jim Parrack, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, Adam Beach, Ike Barinholtz, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Cara Delvingne. Will Smith brings the DC villain Deadshot to life, while Jai Courtney will portray Flash villain Captain Boomerang. Margot Robbie will portray Harley Quinn.

Suicide Squad has a big need to fill, and will present a unique test for DC Comics-based films: whether or not they can successfully exist outside of Superman and Batman. Much like Guardians of the Galaxy proved that a Marvel film could endure without any recognizable Avengers, Suicide Squad will be an interesting barometer for how far DC Comics-based film can go in the future.
