‘Suicide Squad’ Will Have a Major Presence at Comic-Con

By June 9, 2016

In just a few weeks, pop culture fans from across the globe will converge on the San Diego Convention Center for Comic-Con, the annual gathering of geeks that transforms the Gaslamp District into a Mecca for fandom of all types. While 20th Century Fox has already passed on making an appearance this year, you can bet that Warner Bros. will be there in full force, and Suicide Squad looks to be the focal point of their efforts.

The Hollywood Reporter tells us that stars from the film will be featured in a taping of The Conan O’Brien Show on Saturday, July 23, and will also make an appearance at the DC Entertainment Booth to sign autographs for fans eager enough to brave the notoriously cramped exhibit floor. Warner Bros. is keeping a lid on their annual Hall H presentation, but it’s a safe bet that Suicide Squad will be a major factor there, as well.

The Hard Rock Hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter will also take part in the festivities, transforming part of the building into a replica of the Belle Reve Penitentiary, the fictional prison where the members of the Suicide Squad are detained in the feature film. The site will also revive the Harley Quinn Tattoo Parlor after its well-received run during the SXSW Film Festival, and will feature a brand new virtual reality experience that will give fans the opportunity to fight alongside Squad members in a scene from the upcoming movie.

Comic-Con tickets may be sold out, but hope is not yet lost: DC Comics is sponsoring the Squad Up! Suicide Squad Cosplay Contest, which encouraging fans to dress up as their favorite characters from the film and submit their photos. Once the votes are tallied eleven winners will be chosen – one for each character – and the lucky ones will receive an all-expenses paid trip to San Diego to show off their costumes at Comic-Con. Not a bad trade-off.

San Diego Comic-Con runs from July 21-24, with Preview Night being held on July 20. Suicide Squad will blast its way into theaters just two weeks later, on August 5.
