‘Supergirl’ Casts Its Superman For Season 2

By June 16, 2016

Over the past few weeks, ever since it was announced that Supergirl would be fully introducing the character of Superman/Clark Kent for the first time (after only mentions and shadowy appearances in the first season) in its sophomore season on The CW, fans have been busy with theories of who the series’ showrunners might cast in the role. Could it be Smallville‘s Tom Welling? As many fans had hoped?

Unfortunately, it looks like Welling will not be donning the suit again any time soon, despite some serious fan support asking for him to.

It has been announced though, that Teen Wolf and Everybody Wants Some!! star Tyler Hoechlin will be playing the role of Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman in the new season. He will first be seen when the character visits his cousin in National City, in the first two episodes of the sophomore season. Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg commented on the announcement with the following:

“Greg [Berlanti] and I have wanted to work with Tyler for ages, so this worked out perfectly because Tyler is Superman. We are so thrilled and humbled to add another amazing actor to the legacy of this iconic character.”

In addition to his previously mentioned credits, comic book fans may also recognize Hoechlin as Tom Hanks’ son in the film adaptation of Road to Perdition. After receiving critical acclaim for his work in Everybody Wants Some!! earlier this year though, this comes as just yet another exciting new development in Hoechlin’s career, on both the big and small screens.

After creating the character as a bit of an idea and figure more than a real character in the first season, it will be interesting to see just how involved Superman becomes in the show’s second season, and how much character development he might receive as well. It will, after all, remain Kara’s show through and through, and I imagine the series’ creative team will have to be careful to make sure that Superman, when he is onscreen, doesn’t ever take away the spotlight from her. We’ll have to wait and see to find out of course, but with this announced now, I don’t think we’ll have to wait all that long before we get our first image of Hoechlin in costume as the character. SDCC is right around the corner after all.

Supergirl season 2 will premiere on the CW later this year.
