SXSW: Sarah Silverman, Michael Cera and Co. Launch New YouTube Comedy Channel

By March 11, 2013

Much like San Diego Comic Con, South by Southwest (SxSW) is THE place for musicians, tech gurus, celebs and filmmakers gather to unleash their work (some publicly for the first time)…and now we have a new thing to look at called Jash.

Founded by comedic powerhouses Sarah Silverman, Eric Wareheim, Michael Cera, Tim Heidecker and Reggie Watts (pictured above), Jash is the latest comedy edition to the YouTube family and promises to be interesting, if nothing else.

Known for their unique brands of comedy, this gang of five quickly said “yes!” when Google offered them a place to not only produce new material but have free rein to do so…something that appealed immensely to Silverman and Co.

“We (the team) each have pages within Jash and we each can curate those pages,” Silverman said yesterday during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter before the site’s official launch. “This is what we think is funny. It may not be your cup of tea, but there’s no testing involved, there’s no second-guessing of what a 14-year-old boy would like. It’s just a place to do stuff and fail or not fail.”

Who or what IS Jash?

Jash, (according to Silverman) occurred when the name they originally wanted for the channel (Josh) was taken, so the acronym “Just Attitude So Hey” was formed one night by the team over dinner when Tim Heidecker said “Just attitude!” followed by Michael Cera adding “So…hey?”

If you’re thinking “this may go up in flames if not properly maintained by the right people”, you’d be right.  The men behind the curtain are co-executive producer Douglas DeLuca (Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!) and former Kimmel exec Daniel Kellison (creator – Crank Yankers, The Man Show); two guys who know experimental comedy like the back of their hand.

Enough ticky-talky! I’ll let the gang explain it themselves in this handy-dandy video.

So what can you expect from Jash? Basically everything (including a “French film noir trailer” offering from Silverman and 25-minute short film by Cera) AND the kitchen sink.

But most importantly, including to Tim Heidecker, expect “a bulls**t-free experience.”

A-friggin’-MEN, y’all.

Jash is still in the infancy stages so like all things on the internet, it’s a work in progress but the progress is looking sweet so far!

Wanna check out this recent bundle of comedic joy known as Jash? Sweet. Check ’em out on their official YouTube channel, official website, FacebookTwitter AND Instagram pages for news, fun behind the scenes pics, and (duh) VIDEOS!

Welcome to the internet, Jash; I expect great (and weird) things from you!
