Taboo is set in 1814 and follows the story of James Keziah Delaney, who after being all around the world and believed to be dead, returns to London from Africa to inherit his father’s shipping “empire” and rebuild a suitable life for himself. Did I also mention it stars Tom Hardy? Created by Ridley Scott and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), from a story by Hardy and his father, the new eight-part FX miniseries promises to be one of the can’t-miss additions to the TV lineup this year.
The series is a co-production between the BBC and FX as well, with the latter releasing the first trailer for the series online today, and in case you were wondering – it looks just as crazy and gorgeous as you might have expected.
Check out the first trailer for Taboo below:
Here’s the series’ full synopsis as well:
“TABOO follows James Keziah Delaney, a man who has been to the ends of the earth and come back irrevocably changed. Believed to be long dead, he returns home to London from Africa in 1814 to inherit what is left of his father’s shipping empire and rebuild a life for himself. But when his father’s legacy is revealed to be a poisoned chalice and enemies lurk in every dark corner, James must navigate increasingly complex territories to avoid his own death sentence. Encircled by conspiracy, murder, and betrayal – a dark family mystery unfolds in an explosively colourful tale of love and treachery.”
After a strong supporting role in season two of BBC and Netflix’s Peaky Blinders as well, created by Steven Knight (watch it if you haven’t), it’ll be interesting to see Hardy carrying a much longer story than we usually see him take on here. He joins a growing list of A-list celebrities transitioning over to the TV world though, with The Force Awakens‘ Oscar Isaac leading HBO’s Show Me a Hero last year as well, Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in the first season of True Detective, etc. etc.
It just goes to show that more and more actors are looking for much meatier roles than they’re usually offered and if they want that, the best seem to be in the TV world, where a number of the industry’s best writers work and live as well. The combination of savagery and upper class ethics in Taboo look like an interesting contrast from this trailer alone though, and it looks like something we haven’t really seen before honestly. How often do you get to say that nowadays?
Taboo will premiere on FX.
