Do you want to drive Ryan Gosling’s golf cart?
Blade Runner 2
If he directed it, we’d watch it.
I’d recommend not sending any crazy gifts this time.
With an impressive director at the helm, Harrison Ford returning as Rick Deckard, and exciting new additions in Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, and Dave Bautista – Alcon Entertainment’s Blade Runner sequel has been shaping up to be an increasingly more intriguing follow up to original 1982 sci-fi film.
Which is probably why the initial news of the film receiving a January 2018 release date was so strange, and worrying, since that month is often referred to as the time of the year when Hollywood feels the need to unload all of their worst projects and films.
It turns out, we may have worried for no reason after all though, as the studio has officially announced a new release date for the film on October 6th, 2017, with shooting on the project set to begin this summer in July. Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners, Sicario) will direct the film, based on a screenplay by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green.
Coming off of a streak with Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario as well, Villeneuve is easily, one of the most consistently amazing filmmakers working in the industry today, and is probably the thing about this sequel that gives me the most confidence in it at this point. Not to mention the hype that the film’s script has already received from several members of its creative team and cast.
Set decades after the original film, there’s still no word on what the official story of the film will revolve around, other than it will be bringing back Ford’s Deckard in some capacity. For a movie that’s attempting to continue the story of one of the most beloved films ever made too, the amount of good will surrounding it is shocking, but it’s also a testament to the level of talent that has become involved in it already. With a much better release date set now as well during next year’s awards season, it will be interesting to see just how the sequel will try to face the obstacles standing in its way. And if it will be able to soar over them, or trip up along the way.
Blade Runner 2 is set to hit theatres on October 6th, 2017.
