Christopher Nolan tackles a WWII epic in his newest onscreen endeavor…
One of Christopher Nolan’s long-time and most frequent collaborators is set to reteam with the critically-acclaimed filmmaker once again it looks like, on Nolan’s new, upcoming WWII epic, Dunkirk, based on the true story of the Miracle of Dunkirk/Operation Dynamo, which rescued over 200,000 allied troops trapped by the Nazis at the time.
TheWrap is reporting that Peaky Blinders star, Cillian Murphy, is the latest addition to the film’s cast as well, in a currently unknown supporting role. One Direction’s Harry Styles was recently cast in the film alongside unknown British actor, Fionn Whitehead, who will star as the film’s lead. Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, and Jack Lowden are also set to star in the film as well, which is currently being described as an action-thriller.
Based on a script co-written between Nolan and his brother/frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan, the film will shoot on location in France, and will be shot using a combination of IMAX 65mm film cameras and 65mm large format film cameras, which should help to provide an even larger scope to the film’s war time action, something Nolan has demonstrated his abilities using numerous times in the past.
From where I’m sitting right now as well, this is shaping up to be one of the most interesting and anticipated films of next year already. With a talented filmmaker experienced in high-quality spectacle, an even more impressive cast to boot, and a premise that sounds in line with all of the other war time classics from directors like Steven Spielberg – Dunkirk sounds more and more like an interesting new addition to Nolan’s growing filmography.
After working with Murphy (one of Hollywood’s most underrated and under-appreciated actors) on both The Dark Knight trilogy and Inception as well, it’s nice to see Nolan sticking to his familiar stable some more, as well as bringing new faces into the fray. Following his awards-worthy work in Peaky Blinders as well, Murphy is at the pinnacle of his career right now as far as I’m concerned, and I’m just looking forward to seeing how his talent is utilized onscreen here.
Dunkirk is set to hit theatres on July 21st, 2017.
