Edge of Tomorrow ended up being one of the best and most fun films of last year, that unfortunately, not nearly enough people saw. The film benefited from solid Blu-ray and DVD sales due to stellar word of mouth, but what probably should have been one of the largest films of last summer instead became the film that everyone told their friends they needed to see after it was already out of theaters.
The movie was one of a recent streak of projects showing that Tom Cruise could still carry an action film on his shoulders, and also introduced one of the strongest female characters of the past few years with Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski. While the film seemed to conclude with a fairly solid conclusion, the premise of a soldier having to relive one day of battle over-and-over again until he gets it right is something that could be done again and again in different and unique ways.
It looks like Tom Cruise thinks so too, because in a recent interview with MTV, Cruise confirmed that there have been talks about a possible sequel, and also hinted that Emily Blunt would be open to returning as well. Check out his full quote below:
I pitched it to [“Rogue Nation” director and “Edge of Tomorrow” screenwriter Christopher] McQuarrie and [“Edge of Tomorrow” director] Doug [Liman]. We were there one night and I was like, I’ve got an idea for it.
It could be so much fun. Gotta get Emily. I was like Emily, please. She was like, ’give me another year, please.’
There will likely be some fans out there who roll their eyes and groan at the idea of making a sequel to the film, and understandably so. Sci-fi sequels can be hard to get right, especially after Edge of Tomorrow managed to perfectly mix the fun action expected from it, with a surprisingly strong story and characters. So it would all depend on the team involved. If McQuarrie, Liman, Cruise, and Blunt all returned then that would help to send a message to fans that the team actually believes in a sequel, and wouldn’t just be making one for the sake of it.
Whether or not any of this actually comes to fruition is a mystery right now, and considering how packed Cruise’s schedule seems to be the next few years, it’s fair to say that fitting in a big-budget sci-fi film would be a tall order for all those involved. But if the fans are open to the idea, and the team wants to make it – then it doesn’t look like much could be in the way of Edge of Tomorrow 2.
