The cast for this just keeps getting better and better.
When it comes to being a movie star level leading man, Idris Elba has been long overdue. After several spectacular runs on shows like The Wire or Luther, and supporting roles in larger films like Thor, American Gangster, and more though, it looks like the industry might finally be catching up with Elba’s talent and charisma onscreen, and a fact that fans have been well aware of ever since his days as Stringer Bell.
Currently racking up awards win after awards win for his work in Beasts of No Nation last year (everywhere except the Oscars, that is) though, a new trailer for his upcoming action thriller, Bastille Day, has premiered online and finds him teaming up with Game of Thrones‘ Richard Madden as the two try and find the source of corruption behind a terrorism-level conspiracy.
Check out the first trailer for the film below:
Here’s the film’s official synopsis as well:
“Michael Mason (Richard Madden, ‘GAME OF THRONES’) is an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself hunted by the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet. Sean Briar (Idris Elba, ‘LUTHER’, PROMETHEUS), the field agent on the case, soon realizes that Michael is just a pawn in a much bigger game and is also his best asset to uncover a large-scale conspiracy. Going against commands, Briar recruits Michael to use his expert pickpocketing skills to help quickly track down the source of the corruption. As a 24hr thrill ride ensues, the unlikely duo discover they are both targets and must rely upon each other in order to take down a common enemy.”
Elba is clearly channeling a bit of his Luther character into his role here, and while the film’s story doesn’t look like anything impressive, it will probably be worth the price of admission for Elba and Madden’s onscreen chemistry alone. Both actors have managed to give consistently great performances throughout their entire careers, and seeing them given the opportunity to lead this kind of big budget, globe-trotting thriller makes Bastille Day interesting from a casting standpoint alone. Here’s to hoping it ends up being as intriguing as its cast suggests though.
Bastille Day is set to hit theatres in the U.K. on April 22nd. The U.S. release date is still unknown.
