Tom Cruise and Doug Liman Reunite for Sci-Fi Movie ‘Luna Park’

You would be hard pressed to find someone out there that DIDN’T like Edge of Tomorrow. Of course, that is a gigantic assumption on my part; I am merely speaking from experience. I missed the Doug Liman directed, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt starring sci-fi movie in its initial run in theatres. A big mistake. Because after finally catching it on Blu-Ray on its home video release, I kicked myself. Knowing I missed an epic sci-fi movie in the theatre, where it was meant to be viewed, made this geek feel ashamed. Ashamed and sad that it was a missed experience.

Now, with this Variety exclusive announcing Tom Cruise and Doug Liman re-teaming for another sci-fi movie known as Luna Park, I will NOT be making the same mistake. No, not ever.

My excitement is a little premature as they are merely developing the idea into a starring vehicle for Cruise to start. But if their work together on Edge is any indication, we’re sure to get this movie in the pipeline soon.

From Variety’s report:

It’s still early in the process and could go one way or the other depending on how the latest draft of the script comes out, but sources say this is a good sign for the project that had been in development limbo.

Since their previous work in Edge of Tomorrow gives me a lot of hope – it’s the studio that should have enough confidence in moving forward, seeing as this is a passion project for Liman; one that has experienced a long development process:

This has been a passion project of Liman’s for some time; it was prepared to move forward in 2011 with thesps like Chris Evans and Andrew Garfield circling leading roles. A greenlight had been given by Paramount, but the studio halted production after co-financier Skydance Pictures bailed on it because of a budget that was surpassing $100 million.

No detailed storyline as of yet but Variety does list a small logline:

The plot revolves around a group of renegade employees who venture to the moon to steal an energy source.

For the fans of Cruise and Liman (director of Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) we just have to wait for Cruise’s schedule to open up; the actor has Jack Reacher 2 and Mission Impossible 6 in his cue before Luna Park. Conceivably, this could be the only obstacle in their way.

What’s interesting as well is that Cruise and Liman have Mena coming out in January, their second collaboration. Cruise doesn’t just work for anyone so, in the end, I am confident that he is the last piece of the puzzle. Here’s hoping.

No release date is set for Luna Park.
