We’re only a few more weeks away from the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, which will mark the beginning of a new age in the Star Wars franchise. People are already looking forward to some of the other planned films in the universe though, including Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, and Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars: Rogue One, which will be the first of a number of projects taking place at different times in the SW universe, focusing on different characters as well.
Along with Rogue One though, we only know one of the other spin-off films that Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to make in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Young Han Solo movie. The film was originally planned to come out around the same time as Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX, but was moved forward to 2018 when Josh Trank’s spin-off film unfortunately fell apart.
While news has remained fairly silent on the project up until this point, it looks like Lord and Miller have begun their search for their leading man, who will be tasked with the near impossible challenge of replicating Harrison Ford’s charm and charisma from the Original Trilogy.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Disney and Lucasfilm have looked at over 2,500 young, male actors in the entertainment industry today, who have either “met on the project or put themselves on tape”. While a majority of the names are obviously unknown, the report does state that Miles Teller (Whiplash), Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars), Dave Franco (21 & 22 Jump Street), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Logan Lerman (Fury), Tom Felton (The Harry Potter movies), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead), and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) have all thrown their names in the ring for the role.
All of the names are somewhat predictable, although I can’t really see any of the names as young version of Harrison Ford. However, the names do confirm that the film will be focusing on the character during his early to mid-twenties it looks like, which keeps in line with the comments that producer Kathleen Kennedy made about the film a few months ago too.
I think it’s safe to say that Disney and Lucasfilm have a near insurmountable task on their hands with this casting, and considering the skepticism that has already been cast about the rumored Indiana Jones reboot, they should probably be prepared to go under fire no matter who they cast. Lord and Miller have proven themselves to be two of the best filmmakers working today though, and with Lawrence Kasdan working on the screenplay, the Young Han Solo movie has more-than-enough talent behind it, now they’re just going to make the best casting decisions in the history of the industry. Shouldn’t be too hard right?
The Young Han Solo film is set to hit theatres on May 25th, 2018.
