The stars from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the hit sitcom ‘Mad About You’ are on their way to Hawkins, Indiana.
It seems like it’s been a never ending rumor mill of almost—could have—should have beens when it comes to the longest overdue sequel in history – Goonies 2. In no particular order: director Richard Donner said it was happening; then Richard Donner said it was happening again – then original writer Chrisopher Columbus said it was happening; and now, not to be outdone, head Goonie/Rudy/Samwise Gamgee has jumped into the fray by saying, you guessed it – Goonies 2 is happening. Not to mince words or anything, he actually said it’s a “mortal lock” – which is a way stronger use of words than just “it’s happening.”
Sean Astin, speaking to Tulsa News World during his appearance at the Wizard World Tulsa Pop Culture Con (say that three times fast) dropped the strong words which then ignited a whole new cacophony of chatter for the sequel. His quote that caused the internet to break for over five minutes is below:
I have said and will always say, that it’s not a question of if, but rather of when the sequel gets made. It’s a 100 percent mortal lock that ‘Goonies 2’ will happen.
That is a serious statement, as is the use of mortal lock. Whether Sean Astin (or Richard Donner, Chris Columbus, Steven Spielberg) knows something we don’t, the fact that he’s talking about it at a convention of all places makes me curious.
Also, riddle me this – why did he tweet and then remove this?
There are two ways to think about this whole thing, really. One, he’s trying to drum up some interest (which, come on, there will always be interest for Goonies 2) to get the powers that be to pull the trigger on a green-light. Or two, it’s actually happening and he goofed and shared too much.
Deleting a tweet is usually the sign of of the latter.
Continuing with his comments however, leads me to believe it’s actually more of a wish from him rather than a mandate from the studio (Warner Bros):
The precise makeup of it, I have no idea. Whether I will be in it, no idea. Whether they would even want the original cast in it, no idea.
Again, this could be just him playing it safe and keeping the fans guessing. What’s more, and this should be mentioned, these comments came before his tweet… So, take that as you will.
But it doesn’t matter. It’s bigger — it’s actually bigger than everybody. It’s bigger than even Steve Spielberg, who created it. It’s bigger than Richard Donner, who breathed such strong life into it. It’s now a part of American cultural lore, and the studio has a lot to gain from promoting it, so you can take it to the bank that people will get to enjoy it more.
He’s not wrong. But he’s also, just my opinion, not right either. After all, he DID create a sequel idea with Corey “Mouth” Feldman some years back that never went anywhere, quoted as “respectfully dismissed.”
At the end of the day, is this just more chatter and no plans are actually in place? I think so… I think all the actors would love to do it but it’s very different when it comes to a studio wanting to do it. Alas, I believe it boils down to a simple statement we’ve heard so many times before… We will have to wait and see.
But what I would like to do now is ask all of you fine people in the (Geek) nation… Do you want to see a sequel to Goonies or is “too late?”
