Technology Bitch: This Old School Geek Needs To Go Back To School

Honestly, I think it is time for me to go back to school. I’m an old school geek who seriously does not understand the world that I am living in. My college education feels so non-applicable. Of course, looking back, it felt non-applicable even then. I got A’s in Calculus and Physics, and I can honestly say that I truly never understood any of it. Plus what was the point of learning all of this theory? I even T.A.’ed a freshman course in electro-magnetism (poor students!), and I still couldn’t fix a toaster! And when it comes to integrals and derivatives…who uses this information unless they become a professor or an engineer! None of this made sense to me even back then.

I wake up in the morning and scratch my head. I’m surrounded by technology…something I never learned about (Okay, to be honest I did try learning about computers in college. But my T.A.’s were all foreign born, thick with accents, and trying to teach me a foreign language at the same time—computer-speak. Plus the floppy discs were larger than my notebooks! Hey, I was an 18-year-old girl interested in guys; who the hell wanted to carry such clunky things around!).

Being pre-med, I did take an entire year of inorganic chemistry, and I will honestly admit, they were not my standout classes. For the life of me I could not imagine sp and sp2 orbitals, nor did I understand its importance (I still don’t!). But somehow all of these electrons and protons have something to do with this world I am living in. There are anodes and cathodes and probably by now zanodes or zathanodes (they must have gotten to the end of the alphabet by now!). And then there is polarization, whatever the heck that is about!

All of this makes my head spin. But every time I think about my college education, I come back to two things. First, why couldn’t I have at least learned to fix a toaster? Maybe, just maybe, it would have given me insight into this world of electronics that I live in. Two, why couldn’t my T.A.’s speak English? Seriously, if I could have understood them, I may have learned to understand computer-speak. And together with all of this knowledge, I could possibly have learned to fix my computer that seems to freeze and break down on me on a daily basis (Don’t even get me started on last night!).

I’m starting to think that my college education has failed me (something my parents would rather not hear about since they spent plenty on it!). It was supposed to give me the skills to function adequately in this world (Knowing how my mind works, that could be iffy anyways.). I can still tell you that the derivative of 2x2 is 4x, but I don’t even know what to call those little pictures at the bottom of my computer screen, nor do I know what most of them do (‘Pages’ clearly being an exception!). Yep, it’s time for me to go back to elementary school; I really need to learn today’s basic skills.
