That Avengers, X-Men Crossover Film? ‘It’s An Impossibility’

In the wake of Marvel and Sony’s agreement to allow Spider-Man to appear in films for both studios, fans have crossed their fingers that a similar deal could be hammered out between Marvel and Twentieth Century Fox for an eventual crossover between the Avengers and the X-Men.

But based on comments from Marvel chief Kevin Feige, it’s probably best not to get your hopes up.

Speaking with Variety, Feige was asked point-blank if Marvel and Fox could do the one thing many fans want to see.

“It’s an impossibility at this juncture. We certainly have enough films to keep us busy for a number of lifetimes.”

It certainly feels that way, as Marvel already has announced nine films that are scheduled to be released by May 2019, and we have to assume that Feige and his team are continuing to plot out the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe well beyond that point.

The relationship between Fox and Marvel seems to be a bit complicated. Legendary writer Chris Claremont blames the declining sales of X-Men comics on the fact Fox controls the film rights, and the publisher infamously cancelled the ongoing Fantastic Four series prior to Josh Trank’s disastrous film reboot.

Meanwhile, the future of Fox’s comic-based film properties seems to be in a bit of trouble. Deadpool 2 recently lost director Tim Miller, who helmed the previous film and was hard at work developing the sequel. The standalone Gambit film starring Channing Tatum has gone through a series of delays and director replacements.

And X-Men: Apocalypse stars Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are no longer under contract, which means the studio would need to renegotiate with all three performers to return for another installment.

As Fox continues to navigate these obstacles, one project still remains on track: New Mutants, which The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone is scheduled to begin shooting early next year for a 2018 release date.
