Idris Elba has been one of the most under-appreciated actors in Hollywood for over a decade. The actor has been rumored for a countless number of franchises and roles over the past few years, and he’s currently the fan-favorite to take over as James Bond when Daniel Craig leaves the role. However, he just can’t seem to break out into the mainstream in the same kind of way that many other actors of his caliber have, despite his extremely successful TV career as well with his work in both The Wire and Luther.
The actor is set to play the main villain in next year’s Star Trek Beyond though, which will hopefully provide him with the kind of awareness boost that he’s been deserving for quite a while now, and it looks like he may be close to signing on for yet another, highly-anticipated property.
According to a new report from Deadline, Elba is reportedly in talks to play the lead gunslinger, Roland Deschain, in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. The film will be directed by Nikolaj Arcel, and this comes following the recent report that Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey was also in talk to play the film’s villain, the Man in Black, who is reportedly close to signing on to the film as well.
Like most of the roles Elba has been rumored for over the years, this sounds almost too good to be true. Following his recent SAG Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Beasts of No Nation too, the veteran actor could be on the brink of a new era in his career, and headlining this adaption could be yet another step in the right direction.
Javier Bardem had been rumored for the role of Deschain a few years ago too, and it looks like the filmmakers are going after some dramatic heavy-hitters with this adaptation. So far, it looks like they’re already close to signing some pretty perfect names for the adaptation as well, and the idea of McConaughey and Elba facing off in King’s world sounds like a match made in Heaven. Of course, there’s no telling whether or not this endeavor will end up working out, and Elba could decide to take another direction moving forward, but for right now, you can count me in for this one.
The Dark Tower is currently in development.
