After years of being stuck in a long-term relationship with developmental hell, it looks like the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower may finally be getting its feet off the ground again. With both Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey set to star in the film as well, it’s already shaping up to be one the most interesting King adaptations in years.
With its two male leads cast, The Dark Tower adaptation, which is set to be directed by A Royal Affair filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, may have found its female lead as well.
According to a new report from Deadline, Mad Max: Fury Road actress Abbey Lee is reportedly in talks to play the role of Tirana in the film, opposite Elba’s Roland Deschain and McConaughey’s The Man in Black. While the name of the character is still up for debate from the sounds of it, the report does state that her character is “sexy and dangerous,” with “fake human skin and cold snake-like eyes.” Her character reportedly doesn’t come in until the seventh volume in King’s source material, but will be making her onscreen debut in the first film.
The film is said to be the first in a series of Dark Tower movies, with the first film focusing primarily on King’s first installment in the series The Gunslinger, which follows Deschain as he tracks his enemy, The Man in Black, across a Western-like desert. The next big role reportedly lined up to be cast is Jake Chambers, Deschain’s young protege in the series. A complimentary TV series is also in development at MRC.
After a long modeling career and making her first real an impact onscreen in Fury Road last year as well, Lee is also set to star in The Neon Demon later this year, directed by Drive filmmaker Nicolas Winding-Refn. Her character was one of the many memorable wives in Fury Road as well, and while she didn’t have quite as much to do onscreen as some of her other co-stars, it’s clear that Lee has made an impression not only on audiences, but in the industry as well. At least, she must have if she is in talks to star opposite two actors like Elba and McConaughey, right?
The Dark Tower film is currently in development.
