‘The Dark Tower’ Set Photos Give Our First Look at Matthew McConaughey’s The Man in Black

By July 1, 2016

Production on the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is currently underway in New York City right now, with an early 2017 theatrical release date slated for the project. After the first set photos revealed an unofficial look at Idris Elba’s version of The Gunslinger as well, which seemed to incorporate the Western elements of the story perfectly, our very first look at Matthew McConaughey’s villainous Man in Black has been revealed.

The batch of set photos come via JustJared and feature McConaughey dressed in all black, with slicked back black hair as well, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he’s probably not playing the hero of the film.

The long black jacket and overly-unbuttoned shirt give McConaughey’s version of the character a bit of a gypsy quality that I like a lot, and seems to fit in line with everything else we’ve seen from the film up until this point. It’s worth noting that King himself has even expressed his enthusiasm in the movie over the past few months as well, and it’s seeming more and more like this might be the most promising King film adaptation to come along in recent memory.

With a cast that not only includes McConaughey and Elba, but also Mad Max: Fury Road and The Neon Demon breakout star Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, Jakie Earle Haley and more too, it’s not hard to see why. It is difficult to imagine all of these set images in context though, and I look forward to seeing some official photos from the production, whenever director Nikolaj Arcel and the studio decide to release them, that is.

The Dark Tower will finally hit theatres on February 17th, 2017.
