A poor man’s version of The Hunger Games, the Divergent series of films have somehow managed a pretty successful run at the box office over the last couple of years. Maybe it’s the draw of Shailene Woodley, maybe it’s because of their March release dates, maybe it’s because fans of Veronica Roth’s novels are fervent, but regardless, the franchise has been successful enough to garner, not just one, but three sequels. And part three, The Divergent Series: Allegiant, is set to be released next year. The first official trailer for the film has been released, which you can check out here:
Okay, so the first thing that jumps to mind when I watch that is, what the frack is that? Now, it may be because I don’t really remember what happened at the end of the second film, Insurgent, even though I have seen it, but how exactly did we go from dystopian society breaking people into factions based on aptitude, to flying personal space crafts with laser guns to save a crumbling society?
On top of that, the studio also released three new posters for the film. Not only are they generic, but they are also pretty poorly photo-shopped, to boot. (Thanks to ComicBookMovie.com for the heads up!)
You may have guessed that I haven’t read the books, but I did see the films because I do like Shailene Woodley and Theo James is hot, and my best friend insisted that we go. Now that I’m this far invested, I guess I’ll have to check this film (and its second part!) out, just to get a bit of closure. (Don’t get me started on this whole let’s turn a 200 page book into 2 films as a cash grab thing! That’s a completely different rant, for another day!) It will be interesting to see the effect that the release of Batman v Superman the following week has on the box-office take this time around. Up until now, the franchise has pretty much had the box office to itself in March. That’s all about to change as the big boys are coming to town.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant (Part 1) is set for release on March 18, 2016.
