After a train of disappointing follow-ups to 2010’s Toy Story 3, Pixar Animation Studios took 2014 off from releasing any new films, and even pushed a few back. With the sudden decrease in quality and originality that started with Cars 2 and continued in both Brave and Monsters University on top of the year hiatus, audiences were justified in questioning if the beloved animation studio would ever be able to top some of their previous films.
Then, Pixar released Inside Out late last month, and it was welcomed with critical acclaim. Audiences called it not only one of the studio’s most original films to date, but also one of their best. Now, the studio is beginning to regain the momentum they had lost in the past few years, and with the release of their next theatrical film — The Good Dinosaur — later this year, it looks like Pixar is coming back with more than just a few surprises in store.
A new trailer for The Good Dinosaur was officially released online earlier today, and all animation fans might want to prepare themselves, as it features some of the most breathtaking animated visuals that should ever grace the silver screen. Check it out below!
Here’s the film’s official synopsis:
“’The Good Dinosaur’ asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.”
When it comes to Pixar’s films, they all seem to stem from simple questions. The best ones never seem to over-complicate themselves or become convoluted. What if your childhood toys were actually alive? What if there were actual emotions inside your head controlling you? And now with The Good Dinosaur, it asks the question about dinosaurs never going extinct. It looks like the animation studio may have found another winning idea.
Pairing a creature with a little boy or girl is no new idea when it comes to cinema either. In fact, audiences have been forced to watch bad E.T. rip-offs since the mid-eighties, but with The Good Dinosaur making a duo out of a big green dinosaur and a little boy, as well as taking into account the studio’s ability to tug at the audience’s emotions, Pixar may have found yet another new and exciting way to tell an emotional story, without relying on gimmicks or the gorgeous visuals.
But yeah, the animation almost looks real. Like a bunch of animated characters have been placed in a National Geographic documentary… which certainly isn’t a bad thing in the end.
The Good Dinosaur is set to hit theaters nationwide on November 25th!
