‘The Heat’ Writer Katie Dippold Lands Writing Duties For ‘Ghostbusters 3’

For the LONGEST time, Ghostbusters fans were left in limbo patiently waiting for confirmation of a third installment in the franchise. Years went by, and we wondered whether or not a third film would materialized with the original team of Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson (there were FOUR of them, people, even if there’s only three on the poster). Then sadly, Harold Ramis (my favorite Ghostbuster) passed away, and original director Ivan Reitman bowed out of directing duties (he’ll stay on to produce) soon after Ramis’ death.

Then in August, Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) was brought in to take over but it came with a new idea: a new (female) team. Whatever Feig said, Sony bought it. Next thing on Feig’s to-do list was to hire someone he’d already worked with that not only knew the female voice well but could write a damn good female-driven comedy.

Enter Katie Dippold.

Dippold cut her teeth with NBC’s “Parks and Recreation” and FOX’s sketch comedy “Mad TV” before striking it big with her take on the buddy cop/action genre in The Heat, which starred Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy (who also earned her first Oscar nod for her role in Bridesmaids) and – according to THR – the writer will overhaul the current Ghostbusters script to give it more of a female voice. Since Dippold’s finished the script for The Heat‘s sequel (which may also be directed by Feig), I know she’ll make a super kick-ass Ghostbusters film I’ll be excited to see!

While Melissa McCarthy is almost a given to be part of the team (as she’s worked with Feig on both Bridesmaids and The Heat), OG cast member (and McCarthy’s St. Vincent co-star) Bill Murray named McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini, and Emma Stone as his female Ghostbusters dream team. Here’s hoping Feig honors that wish!

(But maybe swap out Cardellini for Maya Rudolph…THEN it would be golden.)

Not sure when production will start but when I know, you’ll know. Until then, I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts!
