The Internet Mourns The Twinkie as Hostess Goes Out of Business

The world was stunned last Friday by the news that the iconic brand Hostess was going out of business.  No more Wonder Bread, no more Sno-Balls and no more…gulp… Twinkies. Tallahassee was not happy.

As the nation was just coming to grips with the devastating news, the internet did what it does best, snarked the hell out of pop culture moment. Within an hour of the news breaking, Hostess was mentioned nearly 30, 000 times on Twitter.

People across the country started buying up every box of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos they could find. They really don’t name products like they used to…am I right? Of course Ebay auctions for the ‘soon-to-be-rare’ confections started popping up with completely reasonable starting prices. Hostess’ star product, the Twinkie got most of the action. I mean hello? Mouth Gold!

The impending ‘death’ of the Twinkie was big on Tumblr and Reddit as well. The sites exploded with Twinkie-related memes.

The RIP Twinkie craze jumped from the internet world to the world of politics. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie was asked about the demise of the Twinkie, but he was onto you, internet! He knew better than waxing rhapsodic about creme-filled, processed awesome cakes!

And you know what? Maybe all this internet love has paid off. On Monday the Hostess workers and the big shots agreed to go back into mediation to try and save the company. We could find out today if that mediation was a success. So hold off on buying that $200,000 mouth gold just a little bit longer!

And if the mediation fails? We’ll just have to get off of our lazy butts and make that mouth gold ourselves!

I think my favorite Hostess product is the rare and find Chocodiles. Which Hostess product is your favorite? Which sweet treat would you miss most?
