It’s a beautiful time to be a Godzilla fan. 2014’s Gareth Edwards-directed Godzilla was fantastic, and its sequel will hit theaters in 2018. That film will set the stage for a showdown with King Kong, which is the best thing ever. And don’t forget next year’s Kong: Skull Island, which will also help set the stage for this giant monster throwdown. Everything is awesome.
But just in case America producing awesome kaiju films isn’t good enough for you, don’t worry. The studio that first gave us the King of the Monsters way back in 1954 is getting back into the game this summer when Godzilla Resurgence opens in Japan. We’ve already seen a teaser trailer and some leaked set photos of the monster’s suit design (see?), but this week we got our first real trailer and….oh my. This looks good. This looks very, very good. Check it out!
Booking my summer trip to Tokyo now.
We’d been told that this version of Godzilla would be the biggest and most terrifying yet (clearly trying to one-up the American monster), and I have to say this look does not disappoint. This is probably the scariest and most threatening Godzilla’s looked since 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destroyah. I don’t know what’s up with that red glow, but it can’t possibly be good news for Japan.
The movie, entitled Shin Gojira in Japan, will be written and directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) with special effects by Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan). No word yet on when it might make its way overseas, which isn’t too unusual given that the last Toho kaiju movie that was released in American theaters was Godzilla 2000. However, given the monster’s newfound popularity here in the states, it would be wise for Toho to try and secure at least a limited release of some sort. If not, we may have to wait until some time in 2017 when the film gets released on Blu-ray and DVD. I’d rather not wait that long, because this movie looks freaking AWESOME.
Godzilla Resurgence opens in Japan on July 29, 2016.
