The Rock Rumored to Play The Terminator in ‘Terminator 5’

By June 20, 2013

Let’s get something out of the way up top.

You guys might not know me that well yet. I’m the Senior Editor of this site, and I’ve been writing here for about two and a half months now. I’d love for you to hit me up on Twitter (@benpears) or start a dialogue in the comment section of any of these blog entries. If we start talking about movies (which is very likely), one of the things you’ll quickly learn about me is I’m a huge fan of Dwayne Johnson. For my money, he’s one of the most entertaining people on the planet, and I love watching him do his thing. I didn’t even watch him wrestle, but seeing him rise from movies like The Scorpion King and Walking Tall to the self-proclaimed “franchise Viagra” he’s become in movies like G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Fast Five has been nothing short of astounding. Johnson is one of the most charismatic dudes in Hollywood, and I get genuinely excited every time I hear he’s starring in a new movie.

But this is taking things to a whole new level of craziness. A report at says that The Rock may actually be starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming Terminator 5. But here’s the wild part: The Rock would be the one playing the Terminator this time around.

Supposedly, the film could be “a prequel set in the days of Sarah Connor’s parents, marking the first time terminators have been sent back in time to kill a character that existed before both John and Sarah Connor. Incredibly, Schwarzenegger may not play the role of a machine in the next film, but a potentially heroic human figure in or close to the Connor family.”

The Examiner points out that this isn’t a confirmed plot synopsis, just speculation, but it would certainly be a way around the fact that the now 65-year-old Arnie doesn’t look anything like his younger robotic T-800 model from 1984 and would erase the scoffing fanboys who ask why Skynet would create a killing machine that looks like an old man. It would pose a new set of questions, though, and there’s apparently a theory out there that Schwarzenegger’s ability to protect the Connor family in the 1940s or 50s actually inspires Skynet to create the original Terminator modeled after that particular character. Sounds ridiculous, and I wouldn’t put much stock in any of those theories until we hear official word about the project.

But still, I can’t help but get pumped at the possibility of The Rock taking over the villainous role in the franchise. It’d be a great career move for him, scoring a high profile part and potentially breathing new life into yet another tired franchise. He DOES already have a relationship with Arnold, considering The Governator handed off the action reins to him back in The Rundown in 2003, so it’d be nice to bring it full circle. Plus, it’d be different from anything Johnson’s done before, and a true test to see if the normally affable actor could portray a robotic killer. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that this comes true, and keep you updated as more info arrives.
