You know, it really is an incredible time to be alive for comic book fans everywhere. Not only do we live in an age now where characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor, and The Hulk are all on the receiving end of stellar onscreen representations, but characters like Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, Black Panther, and soon-to-be Captain Marvel are as well. After all, would you have ever actually thought you’d get to see both a Captain America movie and a Doctor Strange movie released in the same year?
At this point, it seems like Marvel Studios can do no wrong, which is why when Anna Kendrick said she wanted to play Squirrel Girl in the MCU a few months ago, fans didn’t only show their support, but they and actual people in Hollywood have been campaigning to make it happen as well.
After Edgar Wright recently shared his support of the casting online too, The Russo Brothers endorsed the idea as well while speaking with Yahoo! Movies in anticipation of the upcoming blu ray release of Captain America: Civil War:
“It would be perfect casting, and we’re huge Anna Kendrick fans.”
The directors were however quick to point out how busy they already are trying to make Infinity War work with all of the characters that they have in the MCU right now, saying they have their:
“hands full trying to tell the story we have with our preexisting characters. Anthony would probably die from exhaustion if we introduced another character… That’s not to say we’re not going to introduce a new character.”
Could that possible character be, I don’t know, the highly-rumored Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers too?
“If they ever cast that role, maybe. Do you know if they’ve cast it yet? [Joking] That’s one we’re going to have to plead the fifth on.”
Of course, the role was just recently cast with Brie Larson set to play the character in a 2019 standalone film and possibly in Avengers: Infinity War as well, which the character has been heavily speculated to be introduced for the first time in, similar to Black Panther and Spider-Man’s introductions in Civil War earlier this year. Whether that ends up happening or not though, will have to wait to be seen.
I don’t think that Anna Kendrick will be cast as Squirrel Girl any time in the near future obviously, but all I’m saying is that the MCU could use some new additions in Phase 4 after Infinity War, and I know that I wouldn’t be the only one excited to see her be one of them. At this point though, I’m just happy we live in a world where we can actually, seriously talk about Squirrel Girl being in a Marvel movie, played by one of the most popular actresses in the industry right now.
