A press release making the rounds has made my heart beat with both apprehension and excitement as it was announced that producer Gail Katz has obtained the film/TV rights to bestselling board game “The Settlers of Catan” — or “Catan” for short. Created by Klaus Teuber and known amongst the savvy tabletop set since its introduction to the world in 1995, this multiplayer strategy game has sold over 22 million units in over 30 languages in 50 countries around the world, with the Catan mobile app garnering over 1.6 MILLION downloads. Holy crap. And with the recent news that the Green Bay Packers like to play Catan in the locker room, it seems the game has spawned a whole new group of curious onlookers and players. In the game, players (settlers) find themselves trying to control and own as much land as they can on this fictional island known as Catan by outwitting one another whilst making the biggest land and supply grabs possible. As this game is all about strategy and utilizing space, it’s no surprise that folks like the Packers would play a game like this, and combine the game strategies to plays on the field. Katz (above) and her company Gail Katz Productions have obtained the rights and she is THRILLED, saying “I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it. The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.” And before you ask, Guido Teuber, Managing Director of Catan, Inc. (and son of the game’s creator) is also on board with Katz’s plans.
We are thrilled to be working with Gail on The Settlers Of Catan. Catan players are a diverse and dedicated group who are drawn in by the game’s social interaction and strategy. We owe it to the fans all over the world to make sure any Catan content created lives up to what they have come to expect of the Catan brand. We are confident that our partnership with Gail will take us there.
And seeing as Katz sat as producer for blockbuster action films like Air Force One, The Perfect Storm, Outbreak, In The Line of Fire, and more, it seems like she could turn Catan into an interesting live-action outing. The question is: Would you rather see this as a feature-length film, mini-series, full-blown episodic series, animated series, or not at all?
