‘The Tick’ Images Show Off New Heroes, Villains, and That Same Strange Costume

By August 1, 2016

In case you didn’t already know, The Tick is set to return to pop culture once again this year, thanks to a new Amazon series starring Peter Serafinowicz as the titular hero, Griffin Newman, Jackie Earle Haley, Valorie Curry, Yara Martinez and Brendan Hines. As you can probably imagine as well, it looks just as strange as a Tick show in today’s world might seem, which could either be a really good thing, or a really bad thing.

Following the announcement of the series’ August premiere date and the first official images of the series during the week of SDCC also, some brand new images from the upcoming show have been revealed, and yup, Peter Serafinowicz in the Tick costume continues to look just as goofily weird as you might think.

Taking place in a world where superheroes have been in the public eye for decades, The Tick will follow an accountant with absolutely no super powers who realizes that the city he loves is actually being run by a supervillain many thought was already dead. As he struggles to uncover the conspiracy lying in front of him, he’ll soon fall in work with a strange blue superhero – The Tick.

Creator and Executive Producer Bob Edlund talked about the new series as well, with the following:

“This has been a labor of love for Amazon, Sony, and all of us. The only way for this to have value was if we found a wholly new expression of The Tick and Arthur’s story in live-action, and I think we’re on to something! Visually and thematically this new Tick lives in the textures and rhetoric of today’s superhero saturation tsunami — and for it to be something you want to watch for hours, it needed to find its way to a story with heart and stakes, as well as absurdism. Is it a radically new hybrid of humor and super heroic action with characters you will care desperately about? YES! Yes it is.”

In today’s pop culture, where good superhero movies are expected and commonplace now, and in a same world where superhero shows like Jessica Jones and Daredevil have officially entered into the awards consideration each year, this will either be exactly the right time for The Tick to come back, or the worst. It’ll all depend on the kind of humor on display, and how well it balances that and its supehero stakes at the same time.

On the bright side though, and I can’t believe I’m about to say this… but I actually kinda like the suit. Who could have predicted that?

The Tick will premiere on Amazon on August 19th.
