As fans of the series are aware, no one is safe in The Walking Dead. The AMC show has stacked up one hell of a high body count throughout its previous five seasons, making it harder and harder for fans to watch their favorite characters perish, and sometimes in the worst possible ways. However, the longer some of the original cast members survive the more fans desperately hope they’ll end up being safe from the walkers, or in this case, the writer’s often deadly pen.
With a certain baseball bat-wielding character rumored to be introduced sometime during the show’s current sixth season however, more characters’ fates have been called into question by the fans, with many left crossing their fingers hoping their favorites will be safe by the time each new episode cuts to black. Every writer or creator obviously has their favorite characters though, and fans have always wondered which Walking Dead characters might actually be safe, if there are any.
While making his appearance at this year’s New York Comic-Con (H/T Uproxx) Dead creator Robert Kirkman revealed the one character he will never kill in the show, and I’m sorry Daryl fans, but it looks like even he’s not safe from death. In fact the one character who is? Melissa McBride’s Carol.
“The Carol that’s in the comic was my attempt to show just how broken an individual can become from the zombie apocalypse. The Carol in the show, which is a much better character let’s be honest, actually is made stronger by all the more horrible things that happen to her in the show. Killing her would definitely not … we can’t do that.”
This actually makes sense considering the incredibly dark and transformative arc Carol has had since the beginning of the series, as fans have watched her slowly lose more and more of her humanity with each passing season. McBride’s portrayal of the character has been pitch-perfect from the start-to-finish as well, and it sounds like her performance is a major contributing factor to why the character is safe in the show.
The choice also provides a fairly interesting look inside the mind of Kirkman in terms of which characters he’ll kill off, and which ones he won’t, and it sounds like he bases those decisions heavily on how much of an effect their arc has had on the overall series. Carol’s evolution has definitely been one of the more drastic in the series, and if this means that Rick (Andrew Lincoln) isn’t even safe, then it looks like The Walking Dead might be even more ruthless than fans had already thought.
The Walking Dead airs every Sunday night on AMC.
