While Thor always has been an impressive addition to the Avengers films, his solo outings haven’t been as well-received as some of the other Marvel fare.
But Marvel hopes to shake that up with this year’s Thor: Ragnarok, and a new synopsis confirms a clash between two major characters fans have clamored for.
Marvel dropped some major hints about this during their annual panel at San Diego Comic-Con last summer, but now it’s official: Thor will be forced to square off against none other than The Hulk, who has been missing in action since the closing moments of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer, and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok — the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization — at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela.
But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger — the Incredible Hulk.
Ever since The Hulk’s scene-stealing appearance in The Avengers, die-hard Marvel fans have hoped to see a solo film based on the “Planet Hulk” storyline from the comics.
The studio may not have been confident enough to build an entire film around the concept, but it definitely sounds like Thor: Ragnarok will borrow a few key elements from that particular arc.
Hulk, however, won’t be the only Marvel character to join the fold – Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as Stephen Strange for an appearance. This was teased during the closing credits of Doctor Strange, and a blurb at D23 just adds more fuel to the fire.
Director Taika Waititi has promised a very different tone for this film, and there’s a good chance he’s also got a few more surprises up his sleeve.
But before we get ahead of ourselves, it’s good to keep in mind that we’re still several months away from finding out about any of those surprises, because Thor: Ragnarok isn’t slated to open until Nov. 3.
