After receiving a long-awaited update on Fox’s New Mutants film from producer Simon Kinberg yesterday, who briefly teased the long list of possible names and characters that might appear in the X-Men film, a new report may reveal three actresses who are being eyed for the film, giving us at least a small sense of what this YA-esque superhero movie might actually end up being like.
HitFix is reporting that actresses Maisie Williams, Alexandra Shipp, and Anya-Taylor Joy have all already signed on for the new film, which is set to be directed by The Fault in Our Stars filmmaker, Josh Boone. The report states that Williams will be playing Wolfsbane a.k.a Rahne Sinclair, a shape-shifter/Scottish werewolf from the comics, while Taylor-Joy, following her breakout turn in The Witch earlier this year, will be playing Illya Rasputin a.k.a. Magik in the film.
The report also states that James McAvoy’s Professor X will have a large role in it, while X-Men: Apocalypse‘s Alexandra Shipp/Storm, will be a member of the onscreen New Mutants team as well.
Apparently, the studio will be working on casting Cannonball, Sunspot, and Mirage very soon as well, which more or less confirms that the film will be featuring the most classic, first version of the team from the comic books, which is probably the best place for Fox to start with the new franchise, if we’re being honest.
After her Game of Thrones co-star, Sophie Turner, already crossed over into the X-Men universe in this summer’s Apocalypse, as a young Jean Grey, it makes sense that Williams would be making the transition over into the superhero world as well, after blowing viewers’ minds as Arya Stark throughout the past five seasons of the HBO fantasy epic. Something tells me this will be the first in a long line of large roles in Williams’ career moving forward.
The most exciting casting for me though, is Taylor-Joy. She was breathtaking in The Witch, and managed to hold the entire weight of that film on her shoulders for a majority of it, which becomes even more impressive when you realize it was her first feature film as well. She’s announced herself as one of the most talented and promising young actresses working today, and if Fox is smart, I wouldn’t blame them for signing her onto one of their newest franchises moving forward.
The New Mutants movie is rumored to be released sometime in 2018.
