After the failure that Fantastic Four ended up being last year, it seemed like Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men Cinematic Universe had suffered a massive blow to its integrity, leaving it slightly unbalanced. In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past week or so though, Deadpool may have finally brought the studio back to the comfortable place it was after the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, with the Merc with a Mouth’s standalone film defying every financial expectation analysts had for its opening weekend.
Now, after letting their filmmakers create the movie they’d always wanted to make, without any restrictions or studio intervention, it looks like Fox’s biggest risk has also become one of their biggest successes. While recently speaking with Collider as well, screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg commented on whether or not the studio would be interested in making anymore rated-R superhero movies moving forwards, thanks to Deadpool‘s high quality and well-deserved success.
His answer may surprise some of you:
“I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainline X-Men movies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way. X-Force I could see being R-rated, and who knows?”
Rob Liefeld made sure that Kinberg elaborated on his comment though, not saying that there will for sure be an R-rated X-Force movie, but that there could be:
“I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Force is R-rated].”
As some of you may know as well, Fox was originally developing an X-Force movie before Deadpool had even been greenlit, but was pushed to the side for the Merc with a Mouth’s standalone feature after Deadpool test footage leaked online to some strong reactions from the fans. With Deadpool in theatres now though, a sequel already in the works, and Cable being teased heavily though, the possibility of an X-Force movie coming to fruition is on the minds of comic book fans everywhere right now.
Whether or not this ends up happening is still a mystery, and just because Deadpool has done extremely well, doesn’t mean that Fox will be quick to make more hard-edged films in the same vein. But the fact that Kinberg, who’s basically the grandmaster of the studio’s entire comic book universe right now, mentioned the possibility means that we could see this happen at some point. If I was going to guess, I’d imagine that an X-Force film won’t be announced until closer to the Deadpool 2 release date, after they cast an actor for Cable, with the character making his introduction in the highly-anticipated sequel, before moving on to the X-Force film. At least, that’s how I see this sequence of events possibly unfolding.
