Universal Pictures Reaches $5 Billion Global Box Office Milestone

By July 17, 2015

Earlier this month, Universal Pictures announced that it had crossed the already impressive box office milestone of grossing $3 billion so far this year. A mere nine days later, it has a new milestone to report that’s nothing short of impressive.

According to Variety, Universal has now grossed $5 billion at the global box office for 2015, faster than any other studio in history. The sizable push this month is largely due to the massive box office success of Minions, the spin-off of Despicable Me, which crossed $500 million at the worldwide box office this week. Jurassic World is at the forefront of the studio’s success this year, and is poised to cross $600 million at the domestic box office soon, having already grossed nearly $1.5 billion on its own globally.

Other major hits that have contributed to the studio’s massive box office success are Furious 7Fifty Shades of Grey, and Pitch Perfect 2.

This weekend, Universal is opening the R-rated comedy Trainwreck, starring Amy Schumer and directed by Judd Apatow. It has something of an uphill climb, as its opening in direct competition with Disney/Marvel’s Ant-Man, which is expected to take the weekend with a figure between $55-65 million. The studio will also be opening the survival thriller Everest later this year, starring Josh Brolin and Jason Clarke, as well as Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs starring Michael Fassbender.

At last check, the studio’s direct box office competitor is Disney, who also recently reported grossing $3 billion at the 2015 box office right around the same time that Universal did. Still, they may end up taking the top spot again this year, with forthcoming films like the live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau, the Steven Spielberg historical thriller Bridge of Spies starring Tom Hanks, and of course, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
