‘Veronica Mars’ Spin-Off Web Series Isn’t What We Thought

A couple of months ago, word came out that The CW was teaming with “Veronica Mars” creator Rob Thomas to bring a spin-off web series to life. I speculated that star Kristen Bell likely wouldn’t be involved too heavily (it is a spin-off, after all), and offered suggestions of which supporting characters from the cult classic show might be the most interesting subjects for a spin-off. But it looks like Thomas has something a lot more “meta” in mind for this new venture.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter talking about the premiere of the Veronica Mars film, details of the web series are revealed, and it’s not exactly what we thought it’d be. Instead of involving a character (or characters) from the universe of the existing TV show, this unnamed web series will star actor Ryan Hansen – who plays lovable douchebag Dick Casablancas – as “a parody of himself trying to cash in on the surge in goodwill for his revived drama.”

Ryan Hansen

Well, that’s new. Hansen has a great relationship with Thomas, considering the fact that he starred in both “Veronica Mars” during its initial run on the CW and also on the short-lived but hilarious Starz series “Party Down,” in which he played a member of a down-and-out catering company alongside people like Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan, and fellow “Mars” alum Ken Marino. Sounds like this web series will be a relatively no-pressure way for these guys to have some fun, and as the star-studded comedy This Is The End proved last year, fans like seeing their favorite actors playing exaggerated versions of themselves, so at the very least it’ll be something that fans of Dick Casablancas – and let’s face it, if you’re a “Veronica Mars” fan, you’re a fan of Dick Casablancas – can enjoy as supplemental content to the existing show and the upcoming film.

Will you be watching Thomas and Hansen’s new web series?

Hellz to the Yeah. I have been a quasi-fan of this series. I would welcome to see this offering. It could hardly be worse than some of the other schlock we have had to put up with this year.

Come on. This thing was barely watchable. You notice it didn’t have the chops for CW. Give this one a miss.
