Nearly two and a half years ago, I received an email from a guy named Jeremy Snead who was in the midst of his shooting his passion project – a documentary called Video Games: The Movie. It reminded me of what Morgan Spurlock had done with his 2011 documentary about San Diego Comic-Con, Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope, and I felt Snead was gonna get it done the right way.
Now a feature-length documentary, Video Games: The Movie concentrates on the video game industry from its infancy to what we see today through the eyes of those who were there from the very beginning, the new regime of designers and developers paving the way today, industry insiders and game journalists, video game studio heads, and the gamers themselves (which has cast a WIDE demographic net in the last 15 years). It’s all about the past, present and future of gaming.
During their Kickstarter campaign to raise completion funds, they caught the eye of actor/director Zach Braff, who backed the campaign and became executive producer alongside producers Snead and Jazz Jackrabbit/Gears Of War creator Cliff Bleszinski (known to gamers around the world as “Cliffy B”). When Snead told Sean Astin (The Lord of The Rings trilogy) about the film before their interview, Astin fell in love with the film’s concept and within a few weeks, he became its narrator.

And now, news comes that Variance Films has picked up the distribution rights and a date’s been set for theatrical release for the U.S. and Canada!
And director/producer Snead is over the moon, saying:
Games are a part of the human experience and permeate our culture now more than ever before. I’m thrilled that my film will expose the world to a never-before-told story of the men and women who built this industry, as well as what it has become and what it will continue to evolve into, and I’m thrilled to be partnering with Variance to bring it out to the world.
Featuring interviews with the aforementioned Bleszinski, Braff, and Astin, there’s also some serious heavy-hitter names like Peter Molyneux, Reggie Fils-Aime, Yoshinori Ono, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, and celebrity gamers like Chris Hardwick, Alison Haislip and Wil Wheaton.
Check out the shiny new trailer!
Pretty snazzy…and you won’t have to wait long to see it since Video Games: The Movie arrives on digital download on July 15th with a theatrical release in the U.S. and Canada on July 18th.
