‘Vikings’ Star Katheryn Winnick Cast in Stephen King’s ‘The Dark Tower’

By April 28, 2016

After casting a number of its lead stars, including Idris Elba as Roland Deschain a.k.a. The Gunslinger, Matthew McConaughey as the villainous Man in BlackMad Max: Fury Road‘s Abbey Lee as the female lead, and more, the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has reportedly begun production this week. Coming just in time as well, a new breakout TV star has reportedly joined the already star-studded cast as well.

Variety is reporting that Vikings actress, Katheryn Winnick, is joining the cast of the film in a currently unknown role. The film is set to be directed by Nikolaj Arcel, from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner, and is said to be based mostly on the first novel in the seven-installment series. A tie-in TV series is currently in development as well.

The film will also star Tom Taylor as Jake Chambers, the protege to Deschain, as the Gunslinger embarks on a journey across a mystical desert for his nemesis, Randall Flagg (McConaughey).

After establishing herself as an actress to watch out for thanks to her work as Lagertha in Vikings, this marks the first big film role for Winnick in her post-Vikings career. While the task of standing out alongside such big personalities like McConaughey and Elba onscreen can be a daunting one for any actress as well, I have a feeling Winnick won’t have much trouble with it, judging from her work in the History Channel original series alone.

She has been one of the many popular fan picks to play the titular role in Marvel’s Captain Marvel on the big screen as well, and anyone who’s familiar with her work won’t have to think too hard to understand why.

The Dark Tower is set to hit theatres on January 13th, 2017.
