Directors Anthony and Joe Russo have described the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War as “the culmination of everything that has happened in the MCU,” and while they’re not willing to confirm which characters will – or won’t – be making an appearance, Guardians of the Galaxy star Vin Diesel doesn’t seem to have any qualms about spilling a few of those secrets.
Speaking to his fans during a Facebook Live stream yesterday, Diesel confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy would make an appearance in Avengers: Infinity War. You can check out the link above to see for yourself (the Marvel stuff begins around the 19:45 mark), or you can check out the relevant quote below:
“Next year, you’ve got Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 coming, and that whole concept started from you all saying, ‘When are you going to be in a Marvel movie, when are you going to be in a Marvel movie?’ And you remember the first picture after that Marvel meeting that I had, where I was standing with the Avengers thing in the background … there was an old Avengers copy behind me in the picture.
What’s going to be surreal is, that picture is going to come to pass because now the Guardians will be included in Avengers: Infinity War and that’s incredibly exciting, incredibly exciting. Incredibly exciting, and something that if you were a part of our page, you knew before everybody, or you were told before everybody.”
Now, it’s worth pointing out that based on the language Diesel is using here, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Peter Quill and Groot will necessarily be interacting with Captain America and Iron Man – he merely says the Guardians will be “included.” For all we know, they could be featured in a brief sequence before Thanos arrives on Earth to menace The Avengers in person. With so many characters from all different corners of the MCU expected to pop up in the film, we have to assume that some will be relegated to cameos.
But have no fear! You won’t need to wait until 2018 to get another dose of Star Lord’s ragtag assembly of misfits – you can spend some time with them next summer, when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
