Vin Diesel, star of the Fast & Furious and Riddick franchises, has amassed a massive fan following of his Facebook account. He’s said on more than one occasion that he reaches out to his fan base for ideas when it comes to films he’s working on; the most famous example is the case in which fans said they’d love to see him face off against The Rock, and so Dwayne Johnson ended up becoming a new addition to the Fast series. (I believe – spoiler alert – that Jason Statham’s casting for Fast 7 was also partly inspired by online conversations of that same nature.) Diesel has been hinting at his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for a little while now, with speculation suggesting he’d play Thanos in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy or appear as a character in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. But now the rumors are being narrowed down considerably.
Yesterday, Diesel posted a simple picture on his Facebook page that certainly seems to indicate what role he’ll be playing going forward: the photo he posted was of Groot, the alien/tree creature in Guardians of the Galaxy. Along with Rocket Raccoon, Groot is one of the more “out there” members of the team; he can absorb wood as food, control trees and direct them to attack opponents, he’s resistant to fire, and he has the ability to sprout and regrow from a tiny sprig when he’s seemingly been killed. In the upcoming film, this character will be a completely digital creation, and if the pieces fall into place, Diesel will be providing his voice. In the comics, the character is mostly known for saying only one line – “I am Groot!” – but we’re guessing Marvel isn’t going to pay Diesel just to say that one line over and over again (Hodor-style), so expect a larger vocal component from this character.
More rumors have Kevin Feige and the head honchos at Marvel seeking out A-list talent to voice Rocket Raccoon, and hopefully we’ll get official confirmations on these additions soon. Are you excited about Diesel’s involvement with the Marvel movies? It would have been cool to see him play a big bad like Thanos, but he does have voiceover work on his resume already, having provided the voice for The Iron Giant in Brad Bird’s underrated animated film. Let us know what you think below.
