Vin Diesel Reveals Who The Rock’s ‘Fast and Furious’ Role Was Originally Written For

The Rock is basically charisma personified, and his introduction into the Fast and Furious franchise in its fifth installment, was for me and I know many other fans, when the franchise began to take a serious turn towards being one of the more iconic action franchises of the modern day. The drama between The Rock and lead star, Vin Diesel on Fast 8 has been highly-publicized over the past few weeks though, and according to a new reveal from Diesel, apparently the role of Hobbs wasn’t even originally written for the action star.

During a new Facebook video, Diesel began talking to fans about how much their casting recommendations are actually taken into consideration for the franchise, revealing that it was because of them that Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty was brought back and Jason Statham was cast in Furious 7.

At about the 22-minute mark of the video, Diesel however revealed that Hobbs was originally written for Tommy Lee Jones, before fan recommendations eventually led them to Johnson:

“Back in the fifth film, I was asking ‘Who should I work with?’ The reason why we brought Dwayne Johnson into Fast Five was because of you. There was a girl named Jen (maybe, Jan?) Kelly who said, ‘I would love to see you guys work together on-screen.’ And so, we gave a role that was initially written for Tommy Lee Jones but we gave it to Dwayne, and he shined in it.”

I can’t even begin to list all of the ways in which Hobbs might have been a different character if Jones had played him. The same assertiveness and no-bullshit mentality that I imagine probably came from having Jones in mind is still there, but the physical presence probably almost certainly wasn’t. As far as I’m concerned though, The Rock has consistently stood out as being the number one highlight in all of the Fast films he’s been in so far, and I’m just happy that he was added to the franchise.

After all, there’s no way we would have gotten this bad ass fight scene with Statham in Furious 7, if Jones had ended up playing Hobbs:

Fast and Furious 8 is set to hit theatres on April 14th, 2017.
