The current reboot trilogy of the Planet of the Apes franchise has emerged as one of the best modern franchises in cinema today, with 2011′s Rise of the Planet of the Apes defying all expectations and featuring an awards-worthy performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, things only went on to get bigger and better in 2014′s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The franchise is set to return with its third installment next year, directed once again by Matt Reeves who helmed Dawn as well with War for the Planet of the Apes, which is arguably the most mysterious installment so far as well.

That is, until today anyways, with the only details and images previously released from the film being a beach set photo and casting news. However, today it has been announced that the first official footage from War for the Planet of the Apes will premiere during this year’s New York Comic-Con, with Andy Serkis and Matt Reeves there in person to show audiences attending the film’s panel getting to see behind-the-scenes looks into the film, in addition to completed footage.

Along with the announcement, the first official synopsis for the film was released as well:

“In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind. As the journey finally brings them face to face, Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.”

As the human military arrived in San Francisco at the end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, we can only assume that the film’s title and this dramatic synopsis will more than live up to their promises as well. After all, Dawn featured some of the most brilliant and gracefully theatrically action sequences and tension that we’ve seen from a blockbuster film over the past few years, and with Reeves returning to direct and a premise that comes with even more conflict and scale, we can only imagine what that means War will have in store for all of us next summer.

War for the Planet of the Apes is set to hit theatres on July 14th, 2017.
