I remember when Zach Galifianakis was best known for his piano-playing standup routines, but after The Hangover launched him to global superstar status, the dude has been working pretty much non-stop to stay on top of the comedy world. That being said, I feel like he’s dangerously close to falling into Jack Black territory, in which he basically plays the same character in every movie. I think he has more range than that, and I’d like to see what he can do with more serious fare like It’s Kind of a Funny Story. But even I must admit – his new comedy sounds pretty promising.
The Wrap reports that Galifianakis is reuniting with his The Campaign star Will Ferrell to headline a comedy called Larry’s Kidney, based on Daniel Asa Rose’s memoir. The book’s subtitle pretty much lays out what we can expect from the plot of this one (Being the True Story of How I Found Myself in China with My Black Sheep Cousin and His Mail-Order Bride, Skirting the Law to Get Him a Transplant–and Save His Life), and although I hated Galifianakis’ last road trip film Due Date, the idea of he and Ferrell bickering through China does have an undeniable appeal. (I should mention that Galifianakis is also in talks to star in an intriguing new comedy called Will.)
Perhaps the most appealing aspect of this film, though, is the fact that Richard Linklater is directing. He recently helmed the gut-wrenching Before Midnight and his upcoming Boyhood seems like an extraordinary cinematic experience. The prospect of Linklater teaming up with these two comedy giants is exciting, and hopefully he’ll be able to reign in some of both comedians’ worst tendencies and create something that has a bit of heart to it alongside the laugh out loud moments. Thoughts?
