Will Smith On The ‘Independence Day’ Sequel & The Fate of Steven Hiller

By January 3, 2016

Many watching the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer a few weeks back seemed genuinely surprised at how entertaining the movie looked. When the sequel was originally announced there had been a moment of excitement followed with the worry-some news that Will Smith would not be returning to the role that launched his career into super stardom. Many wondered why.

This, however wasn’t a case of Will Smith not receiving a big enough contract or the script not being up to snuff.  As he tells Yahoo, the actor was simply shooting another movie

I was working on Suicide Squad during that time, Roland (Emmerich) and I had talked about it. The trailer looks really cool.

Shortly after the Resurgence trailer aired we noticed a viral website with a timeline un-ceremoniously detailing how the love-able character died, giving this description:

While test piloting the ESD’s (Earth Space Defense) first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller. Hiller’s valor in the War of 96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead (sic) directly to the enemy’s defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan.

Speaking of his attachment to the character and his feelings on his death, Smith said

I’m going to be sitting around with tears in my eyes when that one comes out… It was terrible when I found out my character died.

Definitely doesn’t sound like a case of an actor simply not wanting to do a movie. He seems legitimately bummed out he couldn’t be apart of the alien vs. human fisticuffs. He also has to be legitimately bummed that he survived all that alien nastiness just to go out on a test pilot run? Hell, even the drunk pilot Randy Quaid character was allowed to go out via battle!

Independence Day: Resurgence will um…..resurge on June 24th of this year starring Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe and Bill Pullman.  Will Smith has Concussion currently playing in theaters and will soon star as Deadshot in this Summer’s Suicide Squad.  Stay tuned to GeekNation for more updates!

Mike Holtz
Mike Holtz is just a guy looking for any excuse to talk movies and needs to be able to give people a legitimate reason to spend what they spend on popcorn each month. The Dad to a superhero little girl with another on the way, Mike's also written for a few cool websites and talked for a few more. Also, Mike cries like a school girl every time he watches 'Rocky.'
  • Well, they can always turn it around in Independence Day III and say that he was captured by the aliens after the crash. Though I’m still debating whether or not the third one should be called Bastille Day.

  • David Johnson

I’ll take the Suicide Squad, loved the 1st Independence Day but the trailer of the new one looks to Michael Mannish to Me.
