We’ve known for awhile that Willem Dafoe would be part of the Justice League cast, but details on whether he would be playing a character from the comic books or someone created specifically for the film have remained under wraps. Speculation has run rampant, but a new report might be able to shed a bit of light on Dafoe’s involvement.
After reporting the news about the Booster Gold film yesterday – which was subsequently confirmed by producer Greg Berlanti – the folks over at Birth Movies Death are back with another potential scoop, with their sources indicating that Dafoe will be playing an Atlantean in the film. Which Atlantean that will be is anyone’s guess at this point, although BMD also reports that Dafoe’s character is “a good guy.”
In addition to this news, the site also claims to have an inside track on how Justice League director Zack Snyder will create some of the underwater actions sequences featuring Jason Momoa’s Aquaman:
“Rather than shoot in a water tank this time Zack Snyder has set up an elaborate rig on a green screen stage – it’s a two armed rig, with Momoa clutched in one arm while the camera is clutched in the other. They two arms are preprogrammed to move in sync so that Momoa can do all kinds of maneuvers while the camera moves around him. Momoa’s hair will be CGIed into a flowy, underwater look.”
This is an interesting approach, and probably much more preferable than actually trying to shoot in a water tank. I’m very curious to see how the CG hair effect works out, though – while the digital wizards behind the last two DC films have done a great job making Superman’s cape look pretty awesome, the level of texture detail that exists in human hair seems like it would create a whole new level of difficulty.
Justice League is currently in production, with Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot reprising their roles from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The first installment of the two-part adventure will hit theaters on November 17, 2017.
