William Shakespeare’s Star Wars (Sort Of)

Three years ago, I found myself enamored by a Shakespeare send-up of The Big Lebowski, “Two Gentlemen Of Lebowski“, that really seemed to tie the stage together…

…and lo, it was good.

When I saw this, I wondered what other films would be ripe (and fitting) for the Shakespeare treatment…of course I thought of Star Wars, but didn’t think there was anyone out there brave enough to step forward and take on the daunting task.

Until now.

Enter Ian Doescher and “William Shakespeare’s Star Wars”.

Released earlier this week on July 2nd, Doescher answers the question, “What if Shakespeare wrote Star Wars?”

EVEN the Star Wars crawl gets The Bard’s treatment!

According to his Quirk Books bio, Doescher’s love of Shakespeare goes all the way back to eighth grade and Doescher himself was born “45 days after SW: Episode IV (a.k.a. A New Hope) was released.” And with a B.A. in Music from Yale University; a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School AND a Ph.D in Ethics from Union Theological Seminary, his pedigree is nothing to smirk at and (after reading a couple sample pages) seems to be the right man for the job.

Did I mention this is his FIRST BOOK?! Check out the trailer!

RIGHT!?

Painstakingly and LOVINGLY written in iambic pentameter, this reimagining also includes twenty Elizabethan-style illustrations capturing iconic moments from A New Hope that’ll make the most discerning fanboy/fangirl say “WOOOOOOOW.”

And as if THAT weren’t awesome enough for ya, there’s an educator’s guide for those of you fankids who decided to take the path to teach other young padawans the ways of English literature and the ways of the man who inspired millions to become writers, actors, teachers, and beyond.

By now, we figured every possible way to pay tribute to Star Wars had been done. But leave it to fans of the Force to continue to find new ways to tell stories about that star-crossed galaxy far, far away.
