The third standalone Wolverine movie from Marvel’s X-Men universe has a name … and it’s literally Wolverine’s name.
No, not “Wolverine.” It’s called Logan.
Hugh Jackman, the actor behind the adamantium-armed mutant since the late 1990s, revealed the new name Wednesday as the film gets ready for a release next March. Jackman posted a photo of a Logan poster plastered on the side of a building on his Twitter account, and simply said “Logan.”
The film, which follows 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine as well as 2013’s The Wolverine, is directed by James Mangold. He helmed the second Wolverine movie, and brings a resume that includes critically acclaimed films like 1999’s Girl, Interrupted and 2007’s 3:10 to Yuma.
Logan is written by Michael Green and David James Kelly. While Kelly might be new to the film-writing scene, Green is not. His credits include Smallville, Heroes and the not-so-well-received Green Lantern in 2011.
However, he’s also the creative mind behind the short-lived NBC series Kings in 2009 that tried to modernize the Biblical story of David and Goliath, and also has created the upcoming Starz series American Gods, adapted from the Neil Gaiman graphic novel.
This still could very well be the last time Jackman dons the claws and crazy facial hair. The actor appeared on the Dr. Oz show in 2015, and announced that the 2017 movie would be his last.
“It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.”
“I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.”
Also expected to appear in Logan are Patrick Stewart and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
