‘Wreck-It-Ralph’ Sequel Announced by Disney

By June 30, 2016

Disney Animation has been on an absolute role over the past few years, with movies like Frozen, Tangled, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, and hopefully, this year’s Moana as well. However, it looks like one the studio’s most beloved, niche gems is set to return to the big screen with a brand new, smashing sequel that has everyone’s favorite video game villain making his long-awaited return.

The studio has officially announced work on Wreck-It-Ralph 2 today, a sequel to the beloved 2012 film, which followed its title character as a video game bad guy who got tired of being the butt of the joke and sought to become a hero in other video games in his arcade. Featuring cameos from other notable video game titles and characters, the movie was an instant hit not only amongst animation fans, but video game fans as well.

The sequel is set to be released on March 9th, 2018, and will be directed by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston, with John C. Reilly set to return as the voice of Ralph and Sarah Silverman reprising her role as Vanellope von Schweetz. The new movie will follow the title character as he leaves the video game world and enters into the internet, Reilly revealed during the video announcement for the sequel.

Moore revealed that he’d been developing Wreck-It-Ralph 2 while working on this year’s smash hit, Zootopia, as well:

“From the moment we started working on the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph,’ we knew there were so many possibilities with these characters. This time, Ralph’s wrecking wreaks havoc on the Web—as only he can do. Characters we loved in the first film are back and we are ecstatic to be working with them—and the actors who voice them—once again.”

Johnston added:

“The world of the internet is the perfect place to send Ralph and Vanellope. The scope and scale are so vast and the possibilities for comedy are endless.”

For Reilly, reprising the role has been something of a long time coming for the actor as well, after years of kids asking for a Wreck-It-Ralph sequel and his own interest in exploring that world further onscreen:

“Ralph is a character very near and dear to my heart. I’m really looking forward to playing the big lug again. Making the first ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever had and I’m really looking forward to bringing him back to life. So many kids I’ve met all over the world are excited to see him again, too. They tell me all the time!”

The 2012 original film is still without a doubt, one of Disney’s most unique films in their filmography. Set against the classic video game world and living amongst some of the most memorable and iconic characters in pop culture history, the film managed to not only tell an interesting story about a villain learning to accept who he is, but also offered an interesting take on the arcade game culture and dynamic.

Seeing he and Vanellope take on the internet now, should prove to be an interesting and exciting new direction for the sequel to take also, especially following a film that was open to an almost limitless amount of different kinds of follow-ups and spin-offs.

Wreck-It-Ralph 2 will be released on March 9th, 2018.
