We’re still three weeks away from the release of X-Men: Apocalype, but with the film screening for critics this weekend, and the review embargo being lifted on Monday, 20th Century Fox is showing a ton of confidence in their latest mutant adventure. The film has looked better and better with each subsequent trailer, and earlier today the studio dropped a new clip that appears to show the introduction of Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) as he’s thrown into a cage match against Angel (Ben Hardy).
From this footage, it appears that Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) is on some kind of scouting mission. We don’t see much of Nightcrawler in action, but the chains and coffin-like storage container are a pretty strong indication that he didn’t choose to be an active participant in this battle. Look for him to break free shortly after the point where this clip cuts off.
One thing that stands out here – and it’s something I’ve noticed in much of the marketing for X-Men: Apocalypse – is that Raven seems to be spending a lot more time in her “human” form, and less time as her blue-skinned alter-ego. I’m hoping this decision makes sense from a storytelling perspective, and is not being done simply to capitalize on Lawrence’s star power.
With returning cast members Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and Evan Peters as Quicksilver, along with newcomers Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Lana Condor as Jubilee and Olivia Munn as Psylocke, X-Men: Apocalypse will open on May 27.
