‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Early Concept Art Shows Elle Fanning as Jean Grey

As we all know now, the role of a young Jean Grey was taken on by none other than Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner in this year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, a film that seemed to want to put a huge spotlight on her, without ever actually giving her much to do other than show off her powers. In case you didn’t already know how much Bryan Singer wishes he’d done X-Men: The Last Stand.

However, thanks to some new early concept art for the film, it looks like another young actress was close to playing the character in the film, with a casting decision that may have given us a much different Jean than the one we ended up getting.

Artist Alan Villanueva has revealed that he was hired by Twentieth Century Fox to create some early concept art for the film, which depicted Elle Fanning as the character rather than Sophie Turner. Check out the artwork below:

Now, it should be noted that Fanning was said to be on Fox’s shortlist for the character back before Turner was officially cast, though this concept art makes it seem like she could have come much closer to playing Jean than we had previously thought.

This is also a notably different costume than the one that we ended up getting in Apocalypse, with the blue and yellow being a much more vibrant and frankly, cooler costume than the all gray and black “flight suits” that a majority of the characters were forced to wear during the final battle in the film. If there’s one thing that we’ve learned though, it’s that concept art is one of the better windows into the filmmaking process than almost anything else nowadays, offering unique alternatives and interesting diversions a film could have taken in comparison to whatever it was we actually got in its theatrical cut.

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released on Digital HD on Sept. 9, 2016 and debuts on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD & DVD Oct. 4, 2016.
