Legendary film director Ridley Scott is responsible for some of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and his son Luke is hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps with his feature-length debut, Morgan. The story follows a corporate “troubleshooter” (Kate Mara) who finds herself ordered to visit a top-secret facility and assess the aftermath of an accident.
As it turns out, the incident was caused by Morgan (Anya Taylor-Joy), a synthetic life form that has been scientifically engineered in a laboratory. She’s evolving far more rapidly than scientists had anticipated, and her adolescent outbursts are becoming increasingly violent. Check out the first teaser trailer for Morgan below.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the film, Luke Scott revealed that Morgan has been engineered with enhanced strength and an innate connection to the online world:
“…therefore her capacity for intelligence is far greater than the average human being. … But without giving too much away, we can develop a creature which has all of these physical attributes, but what about the emotion and what it means to be a human? That is something that cannot be implanted, it has to be learned.”
Thematically, this seems like Morgan might share some similarities with last year’s spectacular Ex Machina, but will likely venture further into horror territory. If you’ve seen The Witch, then you already know how effective Taylor-Joy can be in that genre, and this first teaser trailer is incredibly effective, setting the appropriate mood without giving away too many details.
The film also boasts a solid cast of supporting players, including Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti. With Ridley Scott producing and a huge collection of talent like this, this film is officially on my radar, and I can’t wait to check it out.
Morgan will hit theaters on September 2.
