This won’t be controversial, nope, not at all…

Maybe more than any other Marvel film of recent memory, the roles and characters in Spider-Man: Homecoming are being kept under tight wraps, with only two villains so far officially confirmed in viable reports and a number of the movie’s other, interesting additions and actors playing currently unknown characters. Though, it looks like yet another iconic character from the Spider-Man comics has been confirmed to be appearing in Homecoming as well this afternoon.

The Wrap is reporting that Zendaya will be playing none other than Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming Marvel and Sony production, after only previously being listed as a possible romantic interest for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker and at the very least, one of his central friends in the story. She was briefly seen in the movie’s San Diego Comic-Con trailer, and while the character’s name was said to be Michelle in previous reports, it looks like that may have just been a pseudonym.

The Nice Guys star Angourie Rice is set to play a currently unknown role in the film as well, and based on her looks and age range, many fans have speculated that she could be playing the franchise’s iteration of Gwen Stacy, who was most recently portrayed by Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man films. Is it possible that Homecoming could not feature just one, but two of Peter’s most iconic love interests?

As of right now, it’s hard to know for sure and it’s clear that Homecoming is doing its absolute best to differentiate itself from the previous Spider-Man films, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re considering holding off on introducing Gwen so quickly after the failed franchise. At the same time though, the movie seems dedicated to including as many of Spidey’s most classic characters as it can, and it looks like based on this report alone, that might not be limited just to the villains either.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to hit theatres on July 7th, 2017.
