We already knew that next year would be bringing the highly anticipated X-Men: Apocalypse, sequel to last year’s acclaimed Days of Future Past, to theaters in the summer. We also already knew that Deadpool, starring Ryan Reynolds and taking place in the same universe as the X-Men films, will be arriving even earlier than that in the month of February that same year. Now, a third film taking place in the universe of the X-Men films has been added to the schedule for 2016, showing that 20th Century Fox is betting big on the mutants of Marvel Comics.
According to Variety, the newest spinoff to be added to 2016 is Gambit, starring Channing Tatum. Gambit will follow the exploits of mutant Remy LaBeau (Tatum), who has the power to kinetically charge anything he touches. A staple of the X-Men comics of the nineties, Gambit has retained a lot of popularity due to his appearance on the X-Men animated series that ran on Fox from 1992 to 1997. Gambit previously appeared on film in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine played by actor Taylor Kitsch, but that appearance was not followed upon in subsequent films.
Gambit will also be appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse played by Tatum, now unencumbered by the continuity of every previous X-film due to the time-altering events of Days of Future Past. Three films within the same franchise all releasing within a single year has to be some kind of record, at least as it pertains to comic book movies. Marvel Studios nor Warner Bros. will be matching this number that year, with only two Marvel Studios films (Captain America: Civil War and Doctor Strange) and two DC Comics-based films (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad) premiering that year. Marvel will match that total in 2017, though, with the release of sequels to Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor, in addition to launching Black Panther.
Deadpool will release on February 6th, 2016, with X-Men: Apocalypse following on May 27th. Gambit will then be released on October 7th. For more on these and other comics-related films as it develops, keep a tab open to GeekNation.
