Ben Affleck, Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, and Emily Blunt in Contention for Fincher’s ‘Gone Girl’

By July 11, 2013

I haven’t had much time to catch up with the latest best-sellers lately, but Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl” has sold two million copies so far and has some solid buzz around it. Enough buzz, in fact, that David Fincher is directing a film adaptation of it. But he’s not the only high-profile name interested in capitalizing on the popular book.

Deadline is reporting that Argo and The Town star Ben Affleck is negotiating for the male lead, a husband whose wife disappears on the day of their fifth anniversary and looks like the prime suspect. While actress Reese Witherspoon is producing, it doesn’t look like she’s interested in starring; The Wrap reports that Natalie Portman, Charlize Theron, and Emily Blunt are the top three contenders for the female lead.

Snagging big name actors like this means that Gone Girl will definitely be the next film for Fincher, and if Affleck signs on the dotted line, it’ll be his next project as well. The actor has the poker film Runner Runner coming up later this year and another directing gig – Live By Night – waiting in the wings, but if the scheduling works out, he’ll jump in front of the camera for Fincher this fall and then get behind it for Live By Night in January.

Like I said, I haven’t had a chance to read “Gone Girl,” but the fact that it’s attracting such promising talent will hopefully lead to good things once the final product hits theaters. It’ll be interesting to see how Affleck and Fincher work together, and this could also mark the beginning of a successful screenwriting career for author Gillian Flynn, who wrote the first draft of the screenplay. Stay tuned for more.
